Marjorie Orellana honored with the Dr. John J. Gumperz Memorial Award for Distinguished Lifetime Scholarship

The UC Links statewide office is excited to share the outstanding news that UCLA ProfessorMarjorie Orellana is the recipient of the Dr. John J. Gumperz Award for Distinguished Lifetime Scholarship. 

The award, presented by the Language and Social Processes SIG at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), was established in memory of Dr. John Gumperz, linguist, anthropologist, and developer of Interactional Sociolinguistics. With this award, Professor Orellana is being recognized and honored for her lifelong distinguished scholarship, making significant contributions to the field of language and social processes, particularly the innovative integration of sociolinguistic and ethnographic perspectives in educational research.

Marjorie has been a long-time active contributor to the UC Links network, both as a Principal Investigator of the Bruin Club program (now being reimagined), and as a leader in initiatives like the UC Links Edited Volume (work in progress).
