New Video! - Intergenerational Learners' Voices: UC Santa Barbara's Reflection Activity

January 26, 2022

This video (from UC Santa Barbara's Community-Based Literacies program) is a multimodal, melodic synthesis of a reflection activity that Harding UnderGraduates (called HUGs) co-created with 4th graders at partnering elementary school, Harding Elementary (Santa Barbara, CA). This particular program is called CBL-HUPS (Community Based Literacies-Harding University Partnership School) and the programmatic theme focuses on the various environmental topics and issues relevant to Santa Barbara's maritime community. Co-learners explored the various forms of marine life situated on Santa Barbara's beaches,  harbor,  watershed, and Channel.

Within small-group configurations, the young and near-peer co-learners discussed the following questions:

  1. What did you like?
  2. What did you learn?
  3. What do you want to learn next?

All groups wrote and drew their responses on large white butcher paper that were then rendered in a kind of meandering collage. The video follows the flow of the participant's voices in relation to the critical questions posed by the activity. The music was written specifically for the video, with added sounds of the ocean and seabirds. This video was produced by Associate Professors Diana Arya, Andy Maul, and Graduate Student Dogukan Ozgen
